News Updates 2017

January
As from Monday 9 January the last three late night First Bus Service 25 via the Royal Stoke Hospital will no longer operate. The last bus from Hanley will leave at 2200 and the last bus from Keele will leave at 2243.

19 January Severn-Trent repairs in Hartshill (The Avenue and in Ashlands Road should be completed by tomorrow. Work is complete and only infilling is required.
19 January The minutes of the Committee meeting on 10 January are now available on the website - under Constitution and Committee - 2017 Committee Minutes sub page.
27 January Roadworks in Hartshill - currently Albany Road closed for work by National Grid. Work expected to continue until 20 February. Work is then scheduled to begin to widen access to The Avenue at the Hartshill Road junction to facilitate entry by buses. The present pedestrian crossing point will be moved further down The Avenue and guard rails will be installed to prevent crossing close to the junction. This may also have the purpose of preventing cars parking near to the junction. The work will not require the removal of any trees.
February
2 February
The Limes Allotments have plots available for cultivation contact Barry 07753420818 to arrange a visit to come and see what is on offer.
9 February Resurfacing of Hartshill Road from Hartshill Church to Stoke starts on Monday 13 February for 4 weeks. Work will be from 9.30am to 3.30pm. Initially access to both Queen's Road (actually Princes Road) and Vicarage Road is prevented by their closure, probably on Monday and Tuesday.
11 February Demolition work started on the former Irish Centre site in North Street in December and little is left of the building. The next major work, when permission is granted is to demolish the massive retaining wall on North Street and remove the ground behind to street level. This will allow vehicle access to remove the demolition debris.
21 February The minutes of the Committee Meeting held on 6 February have been uploaded to the website at Constitution and Committee - 2017 Committee Minutes sub page.
22 February Work on widening the The Avenue at the junction of Hartshill Road is expected to start on Monday 13 March.
22 February The Reports presented to the Public Meeting on 20 February and the Report of the Meeting itself have been uploaded to the website at Constitution and Committee - 2017 Public Meetings Agendas and Reports sub page and will be posted on the Noticeboard by the Medical Institute.
March
10 March The Avenue will start on Wednesday 15 March and not Monday 13 March as previously stated. The Avenue will be closed from the junction with Ashlands Avenue to Hartshill Road and that portion will be resurfaced at the same time. THe work is scheduled to be completed by 5 April.
13 March At last night's PACT meeting it was announced that the Ambulance Station site which has been sold has not been bought by the NHS and will not therefore become a multi-storey car park which was a possibility. With regard to the temporary COPD car park which has a capacity of almost 300 cars it was said that it could be possible to transfer up to 200 cars to the Infirmary site if permission for an extension was denied, though this was something the Hospital would prefer not to do.
16 March While Service 25 is temporarily operating through Penkhull drivers have been instructed to set down only in Penkhull between Hartshill Road and the Hospital. They will not pick up, except at the first stop in Princes Road, which replaces the Hartshill Church stop.
27 March The Limes Sensory Garden re-opens on Monday 3 April at 10 am.
31 March Wacky Tyres - the owners of the building took possession on 21 March - hopefully this means the tyres in the yard will be shifted soon.
April

10 April Penkhull History Society meets Wednesday afternoon from 2pm to 4pm in the Bakewell Street Park Pavilion (off Trent Valley Road).

13 April The Summer Newsletter and Advertisements have been uploaded to the website - Newsletter and News Updates page - 2017 Newsletters sub page.
28 April Planning Matters - Approvals 60507/FUL 26 houses on former St Dominic's Junior School site. There are a number of issues raised by this development. The access road, while mainly in Council ownership, is too steep for adoption as a Council responsibilty. Therefore the owners of the properties will be responsible for its upkeep. There must be a footpath provided but the resolution of parking on the access road, mainly by users of the gym, is a matter for Highways not Planning. 60815/FUL Cafe Artisan Use of premises adapted to for provision for music performances and bar. This will still presumably require a premises licence for the music to take place and the sale of alcohol.
Application 48 Allen Street (corner of Minton Street) Change to House in Multiple Occupation (5 bedrooms).
4 May There was an article in The Sentinel yesterday regarding the forthcoming decision - to take place at the end of May - on the application to extend the life of the temporary COPD car park. The Association's position is that any reduction in traffic using Ashlands Road is welcome, which a refusal to extend would accomplish.  This prompted a phone call to the Secretary from BBC Midlands Today who are researching hospital parking in the West Midlands in general.
7 May It is suggested that the closure of The Avenue is because of impending work by Severn-Trent in view of the blue markings sprayed on the road. Confirmation requested from Severn-Trent. Service 25 operating via Penkhull.
8 May PACT (Partners and Community Together) Meeting tonight 6.45pm North Staffs Medical Institute (Nadin Theatre - ground floor. Information and updates for Hartshill Penkhull and Basford from Police, Community Speedwatch and Neighbourhood Watch. There are two speakers: Professor Zafar Iqbal Consultant in Public Health will speak on how the Clinical Commissioning Group decides on which medical treatments to fund. Ben Wilson will speak on the work of Voices of Stoke, which helps those whose lives are chaotic for various reasons and are often unable or refuse to find help through official channels.
17 May A Report of the proceedings of the Public Meeting on Monday has been published to the website. There was a lengthy discussion about Hospital parking and a details of future plans to raise finance for a multi-storey car park by involving a Government agency and one from the NHS to help them sell land at the Infirmary and COPD. Comments about the fact that the Shuttle Buses were not following an agreed route at peak times has produced the diagram below which has been posted to the planning website today under reference 60699/VAR which is the application to extend the use of the temporary COPD until 30 June 2019. This application will go before the Council committee on 24 May.

 The application
25 May The application to extend the use of the temporary COPD car park until 30 June 2019 was approved yesterday although only by a vote of 4 to 3. The Sentinel mentions that there were 299 objections - this was a petition signed by most of the residents of Ashlands Road and Longfield Road as well as 22 other objections from residents and the Residents' Association and Councillor Pender. The arrangement detailed above regarding the routes for shuttle is not being kept to, at least not fully. Buses are still travelling along Ashlands Road when they should not be.
25 May The planning application to build 5 bungalows with access from Tolkien Way has been withdrawn - this was objected to on the grounds that the access route was too narrow.
5 June Horizon Property Holdings of Morden, Surrey have applied to create a temporary car park at the Ambulance Station on Hilton Road for 157 cars - 70 will be housed within the building and 87 outside. The application is listed as 61114/FUL on the Council's website under planning applications.
5 June HSS Hire Services who own the building used by Wacky Tyres have informed us that that they have not taken possession of the building after discussions with the owner of Wacky Tyres and his legal representatives and so presumably it is possible that it may resume trading in the future.
9 June HHRA have been asked to publish the following announcement:
Danny and Natalie Wilcockson of Minton Cottages Hartshill Road were married at Holy Trinity Church Hartshill on 27 May 2017. They would like to thank everyone at The Church, The Minton Centre and The Jolly Potters for all their help in giving them such a great Wedding Day in their local community.
14 June
The Hartshill and Penkhull Afternoon Townswomen's Guild now meet on the fourth Thursday in the month from 2pm to 4pm at the Minton Centre (behind Hartshill Church). The next meeting is on 29 June, then 27 July. On the fourth Thursday in August there is an outing arranged.
14 June There is a renewed application to build 5 bungalows on land off Tolkien Way - access via the narrrow way. There are slight changes and it seems the access route will be widened. The application can be seen on the Planning website as 61264/FUL.
16 June The reports of the May and June Committee Meetings have been published on the website on the Constitution and Committee page - Committee Minutes sub page.
21 July
The report of the July Committee Meeting has been published on the website - Constitution and Committee page - Committee Minutes sub page
21 July
The Sentinel reports that planning approval has been given for the 157 space car park on the former Ambulance Station site. The question is will the cost be less than the Hospital or Pay and Display charges - otherwise how will people be persuaded to park there?
28 July The Autumn Newsletter is now available online - 2017 Newsletters page
The Newsletter itself will be delivered over the next week or so in advance of the Public Meeting on 21 October. The Newsletter is now produced in an A5 fomat as a booklet. Due to some teething problems this edition has not been printed as we would have anticipated, with smaller print. We apologise for this problem and will correct it for the Winter edition due at the end of October. The online version is as it should have appeared.
24 August Wacky Tyres - Environmental Crime have written to the owner of the building with an Enforcement Notice to remove the tyres.

8 November The Residents' Association will be electing its new Committee at the AGM on 20 November as indicated in the Newsletter. If you would like to join the Committee to help us continue our good work in achieving the best outcomes for the Community please come to the Meeting and offer your services - the more members the more we can achieve and consolidate the future of the Association.
8 December The Public Meeting on 20 November was unable to elect a new Committee because the council officer who would have conducted the process was unable to attend through illness. Therefore the Annual General Meeting to elect a new Committee and at the same time elect the officers of the Association will take place at the Public Meeting on Monday 19 February.
