13 February
Last night's ferocious winds brought some instances of damage in Hartshill. A Leylandii was brought down in Queen's Road, blocking part of the road near Thornburrow Drive. They seem to have had particular virulence in Hartshill Road, because the advertising hoarding on the terraced house by the Noah's Ark is now on the car park and two houses opposite on Hartshill Road by the entrance to Rosemary Ednam Drive have lost some of their ridge tiles. Cumming Street was closed for a short while this afternoon while the Fire Service tackled a dangerous chimney pot near the junction with Hartshill Road. A chimney came down in Lodge Road.
22 February
Dawn Blair hopes to set up a Yellow Ribbon campaign for dogs in Hartshill. The idea is that if your dog is excitable or anxious with other dogs or children you indicate the fact by tying a yellow ribbon on its lead. IT DOES NOT MEAN THAT YOUR DOG IS NASTY merely that it gives people a prior warning that they may wish to give the dog more room as they pass by.

26 February
A protest about the continuing existence of the 50 foot temporary Telefonica mast at Hartshill Business Park with members of HHRA and Basford and Cliff Vale Residents' Association and concerned residents. A Sentinel photographer attended and there was an article in The Sentinel. The protest is about the temporary mast and not about the permanent installation which received planning permission on 4 January 2013 and for which we are still waiting. The company CTIL who are concerned with the planning application on behalf of Telefonica seem determined to argue that both Residents' Association are against any form of installation which is untrue, but seems to convince some people that we are.
2 March
A number of HHRA committee members walked round Hartshill today to examine the amount of litter which has accumulated on the streets and in the alleyways. The worst places were the unadopted alleyway between Grice Road and Stanley Road, where there were a large number of beer tins and that at the rear of Victoria Street (even numbered side) which has been a problem in the past. Here there were lengths of cabling and a selection of tanning spray cans. Unadopted alleyways, which are those which are not cobbled, tarmaced or lit are the responsibilty of the adjoining householders and not the Council. In the adopted alleyway at the rear of Hartshill Road between Victoria Street and Moore's Metals there were are large number of black bags against one of the back gates. The Council will remove these.
8 March
The black bags mentioned above have been removed.
15 March
The worst of the rubbish in the alleyway in Victoria Street was put into two bags and put by the bin in Cumming Street. They had been removed by 17 March.
17 March
60 drinks cans, the majority Tennant's Super Strength Lager were bagged up in the alleyway connecting Grice Road and Stanley Road and taken away.
The Public Meeting was attended by 27 residents, including three from Basford with a petition calling for a speedy removal of the temporary telecommunications mast.

1 and 2 The Victoria Street alleyway before and after removal of much of the rubbish
3 and 4 The Alleyway connecting Grice Road and Stanley Road before the collection of Drinks Cans thrown away there and the bag filled with about 60 cans.
The removal of the rest of the rubbish which has been thrown into these two alleyways will depend on whether volunteers can be found to help the clearance. There is the promise of a Respect Day with skips, probably in June, when Councillor Pender can arrange it. It would be helpful if the residents whose properties adjoin the alleyways could become involved, as ultimately it is their responsibility to jointly maintain the alleyway, even if they have not themselves deposited the rubbish.
7 April
Hilton Road Pay and Display due to come into operation today but in effect it only applies at present to the side opposite the Hospital since the notices on the Hospital side are still covered with black bags.
7 May
First Bus are proposing to discontinue their Service 25 and X25 Hanley to Keele service running along the entire length of Hartshill Road and to replace it with Service 3 operating via The Avenue, Albany Road and Hilton Road and through the University Hospital of North Staffordshire and A34 to Newcastle Bus Station and Keele. This will provide a 10 minute service to the Hospital and it is hoped that it will persuade patients, visitors and staff to use the service and reduce the demand for parking spaces in and around the Hospital. It will however inconvenience many people in Hartshill and also Basford, since the only buses serving Hartshill between The Avenue and Newcastle will be First Bus 26/26A, Scraggs Blue Bus 31 and D & G 85/85B. The reduction in service will be particularly felt in the evenings and on Sundays, when Service 31 does not run and which at all times uses buses with limited access via steps. The new service is proposed to begin on 21 July.
13 May
A planning application to develop 245 Hartshill Road and create 8 one-bed flats and 5 two-bed flats has been lodged. This is good from one point of view since it will bring into use a large unoccupied and prominent building which has stood empty for many years. However the developers are aiming for the Housing Association/Social Housing market which may mean there may be problems with tenants. The building will receive a small increase in height to accommodate some flats in the loft area and another extension. It is promised that the new facade will be in keeping with the brick and tile of the Minton Cottages. The deadline for comments is the 28 May.
19 May
A petition against the proposed bus changes by First Bus removing their direct link to the Sixth Form College Staffs University Stoke Station Stoke-on-Trent College from that part of between the Newcastle boundary and The Avenue and replacing with a service routed via the University Hospital, Albany Road and The Avenue, which route is likely to be severely affected by congestion at the Hartshill Road junction and through cars parked indiscriminately while visiting the Co-op and by the by the reduced width of the road through parts given over to residents' permit parking and the number of properties with driveway access has been organised and can be signed at Hartshill Pharmacy Cafe Divine and Hartshill Butchers.
19 May
Creative Support are holding a Fabulous Forties and Fifties event at the Minton Centre on the afternoon of Friday 24 May from 1pm to 3pm
19 May
First Bus services 25 and 26 will be diverted from the normal route through Hartshill and travel via the A34 and The Avenue tonight, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday between 7pm and 7am this week and the same on Wednesday and Thursday next week because of drainage work in Newcastle town centre. This will give experience of what may be in store if the bus route changes are implemented.
2 June
The Petition produced over 100 signatures and will be forwarded to First Bus and to the West Midlands Traffic Commissioners who will consider First Bus's proposal. A decision is likely to be made towards the end of June. One suggestion which it may be possible to put forward is a reduction in the proposed 10 minute service through the Hospital during the day to a 15 minute service. This would free up two buses an hour which could be used to continue the present direct route along the entire length of Hartshill Road. Councillor Pender has arranged a meeting with First Bus, the City Council and the Residents' Association to take place 24 June. so that we may put our objections and show the petition which has 150 signatures, in order that we may get some changes to the proposals.
8 June
The Community Tidy Up Day for Hartshill and Harpfields takes place on Wednesday 11 June. Leaflets are currently being distributed throughout that part of the area which is included in Councillor Pender's Ward. There will be 10 skips provided and they will be available from about 9am. Once a skip is filled it will be removed and will not be replaced. The skips will be sited at or near or in as follows:
Stoke Old Road car park; Vicarage Road car park; Riseley Road; Albany Road (near Stowell Green); Stanley Road; Osborne Road/Nelson Road/Cumming Street; Palmer's Green; Ashlands Avenue; St Dominic's car park; Hilton Road/Longfield Road.
23 June
The application to develop 245 Hartshill Road has been granted with conditions which can be seen at stoke.gov.uk/planning with the reference 56760/FUL.
24 June
The meeting at the Civic Centre with First Bus and City Council officers produced nothing to change the minds of First Bus has their proposals. The attendance at the PACT meeting 7 July also had little effect. A copy of the 150 name petition was sent to the Traffic Commissioners but there has been no acknowledgment from them or any response.
25 June
A Planning Application 50966 has been made by Hilton House to form a new vehicular access from Hilton Road near to the path to Oliver Road. This will impact on the newly established Pay and Display parking.
15 July
Councillor Conteh has circularised residents in Lodge Road, Oliver Road, Lionel Grove, Hilton Road and Ashlands Road with a questionnaire asking whether residents would like an extension to the times that residents' only parking operates i.e. to Saturdays and Sundays. If the response is satisfactory then it will be up to residents to submit a petition.
17 July
Tristram Hunt MP for Stoke-on-Trent Central, Shadow Secretary for Education and Historian gave a lecture at the North Staffs Medical Institute on "Stoke-on-Trent in the First World War" which filled the Wade Theatre to capacity. This inaugurated the HAHO First World War in Hartshill project which has received a Heritage Lottery Grant to research the effects of the Great War on the locality.
18 July
A Planning Application 56776/FUL to develop the former Irish Club North Street with a five storey building housing 300 students has been received. There have been a number of objections from residents in North Street concerning the impact of additional traffic generated by the development. One concern is that there is to be little car parking provided on site the assumption being that students will have no need for them being so close to the University. This of course ignores the problem that where will those who arrive by car from home park their cars, other than in surrounding streets.
22 July
The new First Bus Potteries services came into operation today, reducing the service along Hartshill Road between The Avenue and the Newcastle boundary, by diverting the new Service 3 Keele - Kidsgrove/Crewe via The Avenue, Albany Road and the UHNS. It is suggested that a bus stop in The Avenue might go someway to alleviate the loss. [ A bus stop is not possible - but see details of new bus service - X28 (Wardles) commencing 29 September and serving the length of Hartshill Road and Stoke Station]
22 August
The August Newsletter is published online today in advance of printing and distribution from 1 September in time for the Public Meeting on 15 September.
1 September
A planning application has been submitted for the former Britannia Building Society premises in Hartshill by Coral's who intend to open a betting office in part of the premises. The PACT meeting was addressed by Mark Hackett, Chief Executive, UHNS. Amongst the revelations was the news that the former Central Outpatients site would be retained as car parking, with the liklihood of a multi-storey erected on part of the site.
29 September
A new bus service, operated by Wardles, starts today. The X28 runs from Keele to Hanley via Hartshill Road and Stoke Station, every 20 minutes, Monday to Friday. First bus from Keele 08.05am. 22 October
The Association's Hospital Liaison sub-committee met with Hospital officials and discussed future developments, including the continued use of the COPD site as a car park and the disposal of the Infirmary site and the impact on parking that the latter will have. There are ideas about possible further multi-storey car parks, but the siting of such can not be said and the financing of such probably depends upon the sale of the Infirmary site. The continuing congestion in Ashlands Road by the use of the shuttle bus service was mentioned and a suggestion by a resident that alternative routes might be used to reduce the impact was discussed and an update promised.
30 October
A new bus service "The Orange One" operated by D&G will run Monday to Friday through Hartshill as a circular service from Newcastle to Meir Square and return every 20 minutes via Weston Coyney Road and Meir Broadway from 8am to 6pm. Bakerbus have begun a similar weekday service - Service 26 Newcastle - Meir Square.
